Instagram travel bloggers are like a cult. They seem to have life all figured out and enjoy some unique experiences that the rest of us can only dream about. Let me debunk that myth for you, by saying that when something looks too good to be true, then it probably is.
To be honest, I’ve got nothing against those fellas. To the contrary, I really like their feeds and often get inspired, when it comes to choosing destinations to visit, BUT I wouldn’t say I get too carried away and beat myself up for not doing the same.
You shouldn’t either. Here’s why:
They are not really bloggers
Let call them what they are: models who travel. The vast majority of them are super-skinny, model-looking individuals, sometimes with added work done *wink wink* to get that doll look. Perfect tanned skin, rock-hard pecks/voluminous bust, ridiculously big lips and bright blue contact lenses eyes. Too perfect, right?
Those models get paid to be photographed in fancy hotels or other businesses and promote certain products, in a creative way. Each Insta-photo involves a lot of work and a whole crew, who works tirelessly to get that perfect shot. All these photos follow the same process as an editorial photoshoot for a magazine. Only nowadays, the models are countless and the technology more advanced.
I admit, I’ve been victim of those advertisements a few times and shopped some stuff promoted by such people. Luckily for me, those products turned out pretty awesome. No they weren’t protein powder, slimming tea or hair vitamins!
Real travel bloggers, on the other hand, don’t always include themselves in the shot. The photos are more spontaneous and less studied. There’s usually no product placement in every single photo in their feed… Well, sometimes there is, but it’s promoted in a much more relatable, personal touch. And 99/100 times the blogger explains why he or she loves the product so much and what made him/her promote it.
There’s a whole glam squad behind them
Whether the Insta-travel blogger is a man or a woman, the effort to get their looks to perfection is the same. Enter glam squad to the rescue! Wherever those people go, they are followed by a bunch of people who do all sorts of stuff. Hair, makeup, clothes, styling, waxing… the list is endless. You may see just one person (or two if it’s a couple), but behind the scenes, there’s a whole team.
They don’t go anywhere without a professional photographer
Part of that squad is a professional photographer, whose sole goal is to take the perfect Insta-shot. Before that shot, the photographer will probably take a million others, in every possible angle, pose and lighting conditions.
The photographer also needs to be an excellent retoucher, because – let’s face it – there’s no such thing as perfection. Even the skinniest models can have some cellulite, pimples, freckles or any unflattering marks. Sometimes, retouchers go too far and make those models insanely airbrushed and overly unnatural.
They don’t have as much fun as you think
The opulent lifestyle you see in those feeds is not exactly what those folks enjoy 24/7. Most of their day consists of the preparation and the photoshoot. Before they even try to find some time to relax and enjoy the perks of being spoiled, they jump onto a plane to the next gig and then the next one and so on.
Time is money, so why waste it sitting around drinking mojitos, when you can earn more money? I cannot relate to that mindset, so I cannot explain why the hell they do that. If I took a stab, I’d say that they do this because they absolutely need to keep their Instagram profile regularly updated. Going silent for a few days means losing a few followers, so that might be it.
Don’t envy those fellas
Memories are made when you live in the moment, not when you work your ass off to capture it.
You can still have an amazing, well-traveled life, regardless of how much champaign it involves. A posh boutique hotel doesn’t make a trip unforgettable. Sure, it might help, but it’s the whole experience that you’ll remember, not the fancy bellboy.
Now for the killer body, I don’t have any good advice, it’s not my turf. The only thing I can tell you is love yourself the way you are and enjoy every moment of your life to the fullest.
